{"id":94,"date":"2017-06-26T21:03:10","date_gmt":"2017-06-26T21:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.studiodental.co.uk\/news\/?p=94"},"modified":"2018-06-01T10:20:25","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T10:20:25","slug":"school-children-drinking-high-levels-of-sports-drinks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.studiodental.co.uk\/news\/school-children-drinking-high-levels-of-sports-drinks\/","title":{"rendered":"School children drinking \u2018high levels\u2019 of sports drinks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiodental.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1100.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-95\" src=\"https:\/\/www.studiodental.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1100-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.studiodental.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1100-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.studiodental.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1100-768x377.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.studiodental.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_1100.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dental studio encourages teenagers and children not to consume energy drinks which results in acid erosion of teeth and decay<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sports drinksAlmost 90% of school children consume sports drinks, a new study published in the British Dental Journal has shown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The research found almost 90% of 12 to 14-year-olds consume high-sugar acidic drinks, despite understanding the negative effects on their oral health.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers believe children are drawn to the drinks due to their branding, believing the drinks are for everybody, despite being intended for adults taking part in sports.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Sports drinks offer no health benefits to children, and are helping fuel an epidemic of tooth decay,\u2019 BDA chair, Mick Armstrong, said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s no accident that we are seeing such high levels of consumption among children.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Cynical marketing is driving demand, and it is time Government drew a line.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Sugar tax<br \/>\nThe BDA is calling on the Government to bring sports drinks under the orbit of the soft drinks industry levy.<\/p>\n<p>It claims if sports drinks are sold alongside regular soft drinks they should be covered by the sugar levy and restrictions placed on marketing and display.<\/p>\n<p>The study also found that:<\/p>\n<p>89% of school children consume sports drinks<br \/>\n73% of children believe water is suitable to be consumed when exercising<br \/>\n68% of children consume them regularly (one-seven times per week)<br \/>\n45.9% of those children surveyed believe sports drinks are for everyone, irrespective of age or activity level<br \/>\n65% believe sports drinks could lead to tooth decay.<br \/>\n\u2018Big business is getting away with targeting children with products designed for athletes,\u2019 Mick continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018High in both sugars and acids, these are not everyday drinks.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And if they are going to be displayed alongside colas, they should be subject to the same taxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Water remains the drink of choice when undertaking moderate exercise, and is the safest option for both oral and general health.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The study \u2013 Knowledge of and attitudes to sports drinks of adolescents living in South Wales UK \u2013 is published in the British Dental Journal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Dental studio encourages teenagers and children not to consume energy drinks which results in acid erosion of teeth and decay sports drinksAlmost 90% of school children consume sports drinks, a new study published in the British Dental Journal has shown.
